‘KILIMANJARO is the highest mountain in Africa and the tallest freestanding mountain known to man. It is a mountain where you can hike for more than 90 kilometers, gain 4 000 meters in altitude, traverse rain forest, moorland, alpine desert, snow fields and ice cliffs, all virtually on the equator! A truly unforgettable and fascinating adventure.’
It’s an adventure I’m incredibly excited about, but I’m not asking you to sponsor me for going on an easy walk in sunny Africa, it’s very hard physically and mentally, I’m likely to experience altitude sickness (described by many as similar to the worse hang over you could ever imagine!) and respiratory problems and will be trekking for 8-9 hours most days in temperatures ranging from over 30 degrees as low as -20 degrees. It will be a huge challenge.
Approximately 15,000 people attempt to climb the mountain every year, only 40% will ever reach the summit. Last year saw nearly 1,000 evacuations from the mountain. Despite the climb being technically easy, the altitude and low temperature make it a dangerous trek. Every year around 10 climbers along with around 10 porters die in the attempt.
Sponsor Me
(Please be assured none of your money will go towards financing my trip, all money goes directly to charity. I am also travelling with an operator which pays its porters fair wages and ensures they have the safety equipment needed to make this climb safely and comfortably.)
